A place that has been on our list from day one is Perito Moreno. An enormous glacier located in the Los Glaciares National Park close to El Calafate. We have heard so many good things about it from other travelers, but nothing could prepare us for seeing it up close.

Perito Moreno Glacier
Based out of El Calafate, we had three options to consider when we were planning our visit: one was a guided tour; second was to catch a regular bus at 8am or 1pm (only schedule); and the third option, the one we ended up choosing, was to rent a car for the day. So we woke up very early and hit the road to catch the glacier at sunrise. Once at the entrance we found out the park opens at 7 am, (got there at 6:30). The advantage of renting the car was that after a short wait we were the first and only ones in the entire park!
Standing in front of Perito Moreno Glacier by ourselves was amazing! The stillness was incredible, only broken by occasional chunks of ice breaking and cracking inside the glacier. The sounds of the glacier are indescribable and one of a kind. We could also see the first rays of the sun reflecting on the peaks of ice and creating shadows that would reflect in the water, such a gorgeous scene!
Caught in action! We saw a HUGE piece of ice breaking and I was lucky to be able to snap some pictures of it falling. The resounding echo and splash of the ice hitting the water was epic!
Around 10 am as buses started to arrive we were ready to leave. A long day was ahead of us planning our next adventure trekking in Torres del Paine, Chile. See you then!
